Hair Mineral Analysis (HMA)

The human body uses minerals in almost all enzyme reactions, metabolic activity, and detoxification cycles.  Understanding mineral imbalances and toxicity levels of metals in your body can help one make beneficial lifestyle changes to bring the body into balance.

As toxic metals do not normally remain in the blood or urine for long, Hair Mineral Analysis is an excellent way to determine toxicity as it is not affected by recent meals, exercise, or emotional states.

HMA screening measures the levels of up to 60 essential minerals and toxic metals. With correct testing and interpretation, one can construct a complete metabolic profile of the human body.  The HMA screening will provide a detailed nutritional assessment and risk factors. The easy to read report will provide details on 15 toxic elements and 25 nutritional elements.

Please note that the best results are obtained when hair has not been treated. Dandruff shampoos containing zinc (Head & Shoulders), selenium (Selsun Blue) and lead (Grecian Formula) or other medicated shampoos/conditioners should not be used prior to taking a sample. If hair is very short, clean thinning shears may be used.  For those who are bald, beard or moustache trimmings can be used, but please do not use an electric shaver.

Minerals screened include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc manganese, selenium, iron, and cobalt.

Toxic metal screening includes lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, and aluminum.

How to properly obtain a hair sample:

Points to remember:

  1. The desired hair sample should be from recent hair growth, approximately 1.5" starting from the scalp or nape of the neck.

  2. An adequate amount if hair is required for a sample - it should be enough to loosely cover a 1.5" by 1.5" square.
